The Shroud of Turin…for one last time?

In April 1995, TIME put the Shroud of Turin on its cover (“Science and the Shroud,” April 20, 1995), seven years after it had been Carbon-14 dated to the Middle Ages and the Church had publicly acknowledged that it “isn’t authentic” (New York Times, October 14, 1988). In fact, the Carbon-14 dating, to AD 1260-1390, perfectly framed the years in the mid-14th-century when the Shroud first appeared in the historical record.
